They are rhythmic or arrhythmic involuntary eye movements that can begin in infancy or acquired later in life. It may cause decreased vision or limited vision. Eye movements in nystagmus can be in various directions.

In congenital nystagmus, treatment is applied optic, orthoptically and surgically.

  • Optical treatment: In patients with high refractive errors, correction of vision with glasses provides a reduction in nystagmus.
  • Orthoptic treatment: The results of nystagmus treatments performed with the methods used in the treatment of strabismus and amblyopia are limited.
  • Surgical treatment: It is applied to cases where nystagmus is reduced in certain gaze positions.
