Biometry

CATARACTAn intraocular lens with a thin edge provides clear vision of the far and close distance. “Cataract” is the loss of transparency of this natural lens due to several reasons. The colloquial terms used to describe the clouding of the ocular lens and the associated impairment include definitions such as waterfalls or ocular clouds.

Who are prone? What are the symptoms?

vCataract is often encountered in the elderly above 60 years of age, while it can be rarely inborn. Impact on the eye, diabetes, past intraocular inflammations as well as long term intake of some medications can also lead to the development of cataract. Surgery is the only remedy for cataract which the common symptoms include sensitivity to light, single eye diplopia, impaired night vision, pale colors, and the urge for the change of spectacles or contact lenses.

Cataract Surgery using the FAKO Technique

Commonly known as the “laser cataract surgery” or “suture-free cataract OP” among the public, the FAKO technique is one of the most advanced methods implemented for the surgical cataract treatment. Specialist ophthalmologists of the Kolan Hospital successfully apply the FAKO technique to cure our patients within the shortest possible time.

Benefits of FAKO

The procedure takes as short as 15 – 20 minutes.

Uses a special microscope and is completely painless.

Integrity of the eye remains intact since a tiny incision range of 3 mm is used.

Compared to other surgical methods, a faster recovery and early improvement of the vision is guaranteed.

GLAUCOMA (Ocular Hypertension)

Glaucoma is the increase of the intraocular pressure and associated damage to the ocular nerve. As a silent disease, glaucoma usually does not display any symptoms until the terminal stage and is hardly detectable unless a medical examination is performed. Glaucoma is a slowly progressing, chronic ophthalmic disease without any characteristic symptom, yet increasingly resulting in the destruction of the ocular nerve, thus, loss of vision. Individuals with a family history of glaucoma and those over 40 years of age should be examined at least once in a year. Management of glaucoma may use drops to decrease intraocular pressure, laser treatment or surgery.

ARGON LASER

Argon Laser is used in ocular problems associated to diabetes, retinal degeneration and tearing, and vascular obstructions associated to hypertension. The retinal layer may be subject to some impairment a certain while after the onset of diabetes. Such disorders usually become obvious as the obstruction in the capillary vessels and may result in intraocular hemorrhage at an advanced stage. A specific method called fluorescein angiography (ocular angiography, FFA) is required in order to determine a suitable treatment process. Argon Laser treatment may be introduced depending on the examination result. Kolan Hospital performs laser photo-coagulation therapy using Argon Laser for patients with these symptoms. During the argon laser therapy, patients are seated on a regular patient chair. No anesthesia or injections are required. Abnormal vessels are cauterized by laser beams. The treatment is completed after several sessions which take 10 to 15 minutes at average.

RETINAL DISORDERS (Ocular Angiography)

The retina is a layer that contains light-sensitive cells and nerve tissues lining the inner surface of the eye. Our hospital uses the most advanced techniques including FFA (Ocular Angiography) in the diagnostics of diabetes associated disorders, retinal damage, intra-retinal and sub*retinal bleeding, vascular diseases of the retina and age related disorders of sight. Surgical procedures such as vitrectomy and decollement are also applicable in required cases. Diabetic patients and retinal damage are managed using argon laser.

DISORDERS OF THE TEAR DUCT

Tear ducts are small channels in each eyelid that commence at minute orifices, on the summits of the papillae lacrimales, seen on the margins of the lids at the lateral extremity of the lacus lacrimalis. Blockage usually occurs at this final extremity. Some of the newborn babies have a blocked tear duct at birth. In in 95% of the babies, it usually clears up on its own in the 1st year of life. Tear duct obstructions can lead to watery eyes and inflammation. The probing technique is implemented to open the clogged duct in children reaching 1 year of age. The application using general anesthesia takes approx. 5 to 10 minutes. A probe is inserted at the upper end of the lacrimal duct to remove the clogging at the lower end. The method has a success rate around 90%. However, the success rates decreases in children older than 2 years. Duct obstruction in adults requires surgery. Instead of opening the clogged canal, a new channel is opened between the lacrimal duct and nose. The surgery can be performed cutaneous or by intranasal means. Cutaneous procedures do not leave any skin marks and usually have a greater success rate. All surgical procedures and treatments in our ocular clinic, which is among our strongest areas of expertise, are performed by highly experienced surgeons using high end techniques and equipments.

Internal Diseases

Our Internal Diseases Unit is engaged in the internal organ examinations of adult individuals and provides diagnostic and healthcare services relating to the functional disorders of internal organs. In addition, we also educate each individual patient and raise awareness in regard of preventive medicine and required protective measures. The problems encountered by the large majority of patients who refer to Healthcare Institutions are associated to internal diseases. These include a wide scale conditions such as the diseases of the upper and lower respiratory tract, hypertension, gastrointestinal system disorders, renal diseases, thyroid diseases, diabetes and rheumatic diseases etc. Kolan Hospital provides healthcare services regarding internal diseases by our specialists around the clock.

The following are among the services subject to diagnosis and management at our Internal Diseases Department:

  • Diseases of the Upper and Lower Respiratory Tract
  • Hypertension
  • Gastrointestinal System Disorders,
  • Renal Disorders,
  • Thyroid Diseases,
  • Diabetes
  • Rheumatic Diseases,
  • Endocrine (hormone) disorders, etc.
